Carbon Black Pigments for Batteries

Lead Acid Batteries

In lead acid batteries the Carbon Black Pigment is added to the expander mass for the anode to improve the conductivity. The dosage ranges from 0.2 to 0.5 percent calc. on the total solids. Additionally, the colour given to the anode by the Carbon Black Pigment helps to distinguish it from the cathode.

Lithium Ion Batteries

In Li ion batteries Carbon Black Pigment is also used to improve conductivity of the active material especially for the cathode. But it also acts as a buffer for the volume changes during inter- and decalation of the Li ions. Depending on the nature of active material Carbon Black Pigment is added in the range of 5 percent up to 10 percent calc. on solid content.

The most important selection criteria for use as a conductive additive are structure and particle size.
